I read with interest your article on Meta Data and agree that it is time for change. However, the change we require is to help enterprises to gain the maximum value out of their data, as opposed to simply storing more and more of it.

Discovery is just one simple part of the data integration lifecycle which provides a complete framework to ensuring that an enterprise can ensure they are in control of and gaining the maximum value from their data assets - whether held within fragmented operational systems, fragmented analytical systems or increasingly dispersed across the clouds in SaaS services.

Storage infrastructure has become commoditized. People are no longer concerned about the latest go-faster stripes on a disk array - indeed they are increasingly absolving responsibility for the storage of their data as they turn to cloud computing. However, they must never absolve responsibility for owning their data, being able to access their data and ensuring that their data is of a quality that is fit for purpose.

Data integration software seems to me to be the missing link here - an established sector that lays above the infrastructure, helps enterprises to gain value from their data and provides the fundamental enabling technology for effective master data management.
